Frequently Asked Questions
Which mountain tour should I choose?
Choose Nara if you want a more adventurous day focused on nature, deer, ancient forest trails, a hidden waterfall, and a picnic beside the waterfall. Choose Kyoto Mountain Exploration if you prefer a scenic road-trip style experience through rural Japan, with traditional villages, mountain scenery, Amanohashidate, Ine, and the coastline. Both are private full-day experiences, but they offer very different ways to explore Japan beyond the major cities.
What is the difference between the Nara and Kyoto mountain tours?
The Nara Primeval Forest experience is more active and nature-focused. We explore Nara’s deer park before heading deeper into the ancient forest, including a short hike to a hidden waterfall where we can stop for a picnic. Kyoto Mountain Exploration focuses more on rural landscapes, traditional communities, and coastal scenery. The day can include Kayabuki no Sato, Amanohashidate, Ine, and other countryside stops depending on the itinerary.
How many people can join a private mountain tour?
Both mountain tours are completely private and can accommodate groups of up to 20 guests. A 7-seater is the standard private vehicle. A Toyota HiAce or equivalent larger vehicle may be arranged where appropriate, and larger groups may require a larger vehicle or multiple vehicles. The arrangement is adapted to group size.
Is private transportation included?
Yes. Both mountain experiences include arranged private transportation. Many of the places we visit are in rural or mountainous areas that are difficult or time-consuming to reach by public transportation, so the tours are designed around private vehicle travel. The vehicle type will depend on your group size.
How long are the tours?
Both the Nara Primeval Forest and Kyoto Mountain Exploration tours are approximately 10 hours. If you would like to extend the day beyond the scheduled tour duration, additional time may be possible. Extension fees vary depending on the vehicle type used for your group.
Are these tours suitable for children?
Yes. Both mountain tours can be suitable for families with children. Kyoto Mountain Exploration is generally the easier option for a wider range of ages because much of the experience is reached by private vehicle with stops along the way. Nara is more active and includes walking through natural terrain. There is also a short hiking section required to reach the hidden waterfall and picnic area. Families are very welcome, but parents should consider whether their children are comfortable walking on forest and mountain trails. Because the tours are private, we can adjust the pace and stops wherever possible to make the experience comfortable for your family.
Are the tours suitable for seniors or guests with limited mobility?
Kyoto Mountain Exploration can generally be adjusted for seniors and guests who prefer less walking. Because we travel by private vehicle, the itinerary and pace can be adapted depending on your group’s needs. Nara can also be suitable for seniors depending on mobility, and much of the day uses private transportation. However, reaching the waterfall requires a short hike on natural forest terrain. The waterfall and forest portion is not wheelchair accessible, while other parts of the itinerary may be adjustable. Please share any mobility needs during the arrangements so the practical options can be discussed.
What should we wear or bring?
For both tours, wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather. For Nara, proper walking shoes are especially recommended because part of the experience includes forest trails and a short hike to the waterfall. I also recommend bringing an extra shirt and a small towel if you are considering enjoying the water during the trip. This is particularly useful for the waterfall in Nara and the beach/coastal portions of the Kyoto Mountain experience. Bring water, sun protection during warmer months, and an additional layer when traveling during cooler seasons or into higher mountain areas.
Can the itinerary be customized?
Yes. Both experiences are completely private, so the itinerary can be adjusted based on your interests, group, pace, and seasonal conditions. The core experience will remain the same, but we can adjust individual stops and how much time we spend in each area where practical.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Mountain and coastal conditions can change quickly, so the itinerary may be adjusted depending on the weather and local conditions on the day of your tour. If a particular outdoor activity or location is not suitable or safe because of the weather, we will adjust the route or substitute another appropriate stop where possible. The priority is to keep the experience enjoyable while making sensible decisions based on the conditions that day.
